Through our parent non-profit organization, the Community Ecology Institute (CEI), Columbia Families in Nature has been awarded a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust for a Howard County-focused family watershed experiential education program. Most Howard County residents live within one-half mile of a stream or storm drain, connecting to local rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. The monthly Watershed Weekend events will engage participants in learning about how to become active stewards of the Patuxent and Patapsco Rivers, and our watershed as a whole, through stream litter clean-ups, tree plantings, watershed history talks, and naturalist-guided introductions to local birds, fish, and other wildlife.
The Watershed Weekend series began with a celebration at Rockburn Branch Park on June 25. An exciting event will be held once a month through May of 2018. Remaining events will be held on February 25, March 25, April 22, and May 20. Families will earn prizes for their continued participation in the Watershed Weekend series. Participation is free, but registration is required.
